Muirfield. Home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers

This web site introduces you to one of the oldest clubs in golf and its world famous course. In the pages that follow you can learn of the Club’s colourful history from its first beginnings in Leith in 1744 to its later move to Musselburgh and finally in 1891 to Muirfield in East Lothian.

Today Muirfield is a renowned host to major championships amateur and professional, international and national, men and ladies - all of which have produced worthy champions of whom more later. Ten Amateur Championships have been played over the course and 15 Open Championships.

Visitors can experience the unique character of the course by watching a short video of Muirfield. With the exception of the Championship tees, the course has changed little since 1936 but, in 2008, in conjunction with the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, golf architect Martin Hawtree was commissioned to advise the Club on how  best to ensure Muirfield remains a challenge to the world’s great golfers. As a result, some amendments are being made before the next Open Championship scheduled to be played in 2013.

If you enjoy a challenge, and wish to play a classic links course, please access our Visitor Tee Time Availability facility to check what is available on our visitor days – Tuesdays and Thursdays - then e-mail or phone the club to confirm your reservation.

We look forward to welcoming you at Muirfield.

The History

Golf was first played at Muirfield in 1891 on 18 holes laid out by Old Tom Morris. Restricted by stone walls that completely surrounded the course, the original layout occupied 117 acres.

The Clubhouse
